Palaniyappan Chidambaram, born on September 16, 1945, is a distinguished Indian politician and lawyer, currently serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. His political journey has been marked by significant leadership roles, including his tenure as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs from 2017 to 2018 and as the Interim Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha from 2022 to 2023 under Mallikarjun Kharge.
Chidambaram's influence in Indian politics is particularly notable through his four terms as the Union Minister of Finance. His most recent term spanned from 2004 to 2014 during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, with a brief interlude as Minister of Home Affairs. In this capacity, he played a crucial role in shaping India's domestic security response following the tragic 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
In July 2012, he returned to the Finance Ministry, succeeding Pranab Mukherjee, who had taken on the presidency of India. His contributions to the political landscape were recognized when he was included in the Time 100 list in 2013, highlighting his impact on both national and international stages.
Beyond his ministerial roles, Chidambaram has also been instrumental in shaping electoral strategies, serving as the head of the Congress Manifesto Committee for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections and the upcoming 2024 Indian General Elections.
