Pacorus I

Pacorus I was a notable Parthian prince, born in sixty-seven BC, and the son of Orodes II, who reigned from fifty-seven to thirty-seven BC. His lineage positioned him as the heir to the Parthian throne, and it is believed that he may have ruled around thirty-nine BC, although the specifics of his reign—whether alongside his father or independently—remain uncertain.

In his personal life, Pacorus was married to an unnamed Armenian princess, who was the sister of Artavasdes II, the Artaxiad king of Armenia, who ruled from fifty-five to thirty-four BC. This union highlights the intricate political alliances of the time, as the Parthians sought to strengthen their ties with neighboring kingdoms.

Pacorus played a significant role in the Parthian military campaigns, particularly following their victory against the Romans at the Battle of Carrhae in fifty-three BC. He emerged as one of the leading commanders in the Parthian efforts to expand their influence into Roman-held territories in Western Asia. Despite initial successes, the Parthians faced a formidable Roman resistance.

Tragically, Pacorus met his end at the Battle of Mount Gindarus, where he was defeated and killed by the forces led by Publius Ventidius Bassus. His untimely death not only marked a significant loss for the Parthian Empire but also triggered a succession crisis. Orodes II, devastated by the loss of his favored son, ultimately passed the throne to his other son, Phraates IV, who ruled from thirty-seven to two BC.
