Padmasambhava

Padmasambhava, known as 'Born from a Lotus' and revered as Guru Rinpoche or 'Precious Guru', was a pivotal figure in the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet during the 8th to 9th centuries. A semi-legendary tantric Buddhist Vajra master from medieval India, he is believed to be an emanation of Shakyamuni Buddha, as prophesied by the Buddha himself. His arrival in Tibet marked a significant turning point, as he designed the Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in the region, under the reign of King Trisong Detsen.

Alongside King Trisong Detsen and Khenpo Shantarakshita, Padmasambhava played a crucial role in the creation of the Tibetan Canon, translating the teachings of the Buddha and their commentaries into the Tibetan language. While earlier scholars questioned his historical authenticity, contemporary research has cautiously accepted his existence, supported by claims of his own historical identity and marks believed to be his footprints.

As a central figure in the transmission of Buddhism to Tibet, Padmasambhava's legacy expanded significantly from the 12th century onward, with hagiographies portraying him as a master who tamed Tibetan spirits and concealed secret texts known as termas for future treasure finders. The earliest biography, the Zangling-ma, was authored by Nyangral Nyima Özer, who linked Padmasambhava to the Great Perfection, solidifying his mythos.

In modern Tibetan Buddhism, Padmasambhava is venerated as a Buddha foretold by Shakyamuni. His teachings encompass both an oral lineage and a lineage of hidden treasure texts, with his termas being discovered by fortunate beings when conditions are favorable. He is visualized during guru yoga practices, particularly within the Nyingma school, where he is regarded as a founding figure and a source of profound spiritual teachings.
