Pang Tong

Pang Tong, born in the year one hundred seventy-nine, emerged as a significant political figure during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Known by his courtesy name Shiyuan, he served as a vital adviser to the warlord Liu Bei. Despite being overlooked in his youth due to his plain appearance, Pang Tong's intellect and character earned him the admiration of the esteemed hermit scholar Sima Hui, who referred to him as the 'Crown of Scholars in Jing Province.'

His academic journey began under the tutelage of Sima Hui, alongside notable contemporaries such as Zhuge Liang, Xu Shu, and Xiang Lang. This period of study not only honed his skills but also led to him being affectionately nicknamed the 'Fledgling Phoenix.' His friendly demeanor facilitated his role as an appraiser in Nan Commandery, where he prioritized virtues over mere abilities, encouraging individuals to contribute positively to society.

Pang Tong's political career took a pivotal turn when he briefly served under Zhou Yu, forming friendships with influential figures like Lu Ji, Gu Shao, and Quan Cong. In two hundred ten, after Liu Bei's appointment as governor of Jing Province, Pang Tong joined his ranks, propelled by recommendations from Lu Su and Zhuge Liang. His strategic acumen quickly led to his promotion as Military Adviser General of the Household.

One of his notable contributions was advising Liu Bei on the conquest of Yi Province, which encompasses present-day Sichuan and Chongqing. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he was struck by a stray arrow during a battle at Luo County, north of present-day Guanghan, in the year two hundred fourteen.
