Paolo Veneziano

Paolo Veneziano, a prominent painter from Venice, emerged as a pivotal figure in the 14th century, often hailed as the founder of the Venetian School of painting. His artistic journey likely spanned from approximately 1321 to 1362, during which he became recognized as the most significant Venetian painter of his time. His oeuvre includes numerous signed and dated works, many created in collaboration with his sons, showcasing his influence and legacy in the art world.

Veneziano played a crucial role in the evolution of the polyptych or composite altarpiece form in Venice. This innovative style gained popularity across Italy in response to liturgical changes that altered the dynamics of worship. As priests began to celebrate mass with their backs to the congregation, the need for visually striking altarpieces behind and above the altar became essential, providing a focal point for devotion.

As the oldest Venetian painter whose name is known, Veneziano was also the first to depict the new subject of the Coronation of the Virgin. His artistic style, while still rooted in Byzantine traditions, began to show the influence of Gothic art from northern regions, alongside personal elements that marked his unique approach. Notably, the influence of Giotto is largely absent from his work, setting him apart from his contemporaries.
