Paramahansa Yogananda, born on January fifth, nineteen ninety-three, was a revered Indian and American Hindu monk, yogi, and philosopher. He is best known for founding the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) and the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), organizations dedicated to spreading his teachings on meditation and Kriya Yoga. As a chief disciple of the esteemed yoga guru Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, Yogananda was entrusted with the mission of introducing yogic principles to the Western world.
At the age of twenty-seven, Yogananda immigrated to the United States, aiming to bridge the gap between Eastern spirituality and Western materialism. His arrival in Boston in nineteen twenty marked the beginning of a successful speaking tour that would eventually lead him to settle in Los Angeles in nineteen twenty-five. Over the next twenty-five years, he became a prominent figure in the American yoga movement, earning the title of the 'Father of Yoga in the West' due to his significant influence on the yoga culture, particularly in Los Angeles.
Yogananda's impact extended beyond his teachings; he was the first prominent Indian spiritual leader to be welcomed at the White House, hosted by President Calvin Coolidge in nineteen twenty-seven. His charisma and teachings attracted a diverse following, and he initiated thousands into the practice of Kriya Yoga. By nineteen fifty-two, SRF had established over one hundred centers across India and the United States, with groups in nearly every major American city by two thousand twelve.
In nineteen forty-six, he published his acclaimed work, 'Autobiography of a Yogi,' which has sold over four million copies and is celebrated as one of the best spiritual books of the twentieth century. The book has profoundly influenced many, including notable figures like former Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Elvis Presley. Yogananda's legacy continues to thrive, with a documentary about his life, 'Awake: The Life of Yogananda,' released in two thousand fourteen, solidifying his status as a leading figure in Western spirituality.
