Pasquale Cicogna

Pasquale Cicogna, born on May twenty-seventh, fifteen oh nine, served as the eighty-eighth Doge of Venice from fifteen eighty-five until fifteen ninety-five. His tenure was marked by a notable diplomatic acumen, which helped him navigate the complex political landscape of his time. One of his significant achievements was his support for Henry of Navarre's claim to the French throne, successfully persuading Pope Sixtus V to back Henry in exchange for his conversion to Catholicism.

Breaking with tradition, Cicogna made a memorable impression during his coronation procession by scattering silver coins, known as cicognini, instead of the customary gold ducats. This act not only showcased his unique approach to leadership but also endeared him to the citizens of Venice, contributing to his growing popularity throughout his reign.

Among his many accomplishments, perhaps the most remarkable was the transformation of the Rialto Bridge, a vital landmark and the only bridge spanning the Grand Canal of Venice. Between fifteen eighty-eight and fifteen ninety-one, he oversaw the conversion of the bridge from wood to stone, opting for the designs of the humble architect Antonio da Ponte and his nephew Antonio Contin, despite the submissions from more renowned figures like Michelangelo.

Pasquale Cicogna's legacy continued even after his death from a fever in fifteen ninety-five, as a memorial was inscribed on the Rialto Bridge in his honor. His dogaressa, Laura Morozini, stood by him during his impactful reign, which left an indelible mark on the history of Venice.
