Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow

Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow, born Yermolay in 1530, played a pivotal role in Russian history as the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia starting in 1606. His leadership was instrumental in inspiring the popular uprising that ultimately brought an end to the tumultuous Time of Troubles, a period marked by political instability and foreign intervention.

Before ascending to the patriarchate, Hermogenes was appointed Metropolitan of Kazan during the Holy Synod of 1589, which marked the establishment of the patriarchate in Moscow. His tenure in Kazan was notable for his efforts in converting numerous Muslim Volga Tatars to Eastern Orthodoxy, thereby expanding the influence of the church in the region.

In 1606, Hermogenes found himself embroiled in the political machinations of the time when he was summoned by False Dmitry I to participate in the newly formed Senate in Moscow. Upon discovering the tsar's intention to marry Marina Mniszech, a Roman Catholic, he vehemently opposed the alliance, leading to his exile from the capital. However, his fortunes changed when False Dmitry was deposed, allowing Hermogenes to return to Moscow with great honors.

His legacy was further solidified when he was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1913, recognizing his significant contributions to the faith and the nation during a critical period in Russian history.
