Patrick Mahomes, born on September 17, 1995, is an iconic American professional football quarterback who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL). After being drafted tenth overall by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mahomes spent his rookie season as a backup to Alex Smith. However, in 2018, he took the reins as the starting quarterback and quickly made his mark by throwing for over five thousand passing yards and fifty touchdowns, a feat that only a select few have achieved in both college and the NFL.
Mahomes' remarkable performance in his first season as a starter earned him the NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFL Most Valuable Player awards, making him one of only four Black quarterbacks to win the prestigious AP MVP award. His leadership propelled the Chiefs to seven consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances and five Super Bowl appearances, where he triumphed in three, solidifying his status as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
In the 2019 season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in fifty years, earning the Super Bowl MVP title as the youngest quarterback to do so. His success continued with a ten-year contract extension worth over four hundred fifty million dollars, one of the largest contracts in sports history. Although the Chiefs faced a setback in Super Bowl LV in 2020, Mahomes rebounded in the 2022 season, leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns, winning NFL MVP, and securing another Super Bowl MVP after clinching Super Bowl LVII.
Mahomes' legacy continued to grow as he led the Chiefs to back-to-back titles, winning his third Super Bowl MVP after Super Bowl LVIII. In the 2024 season, he guided the Chiefs to their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, although they fell short in Super Bowl LIX, missing out on a historic three-peat. Widely regarded as the best quarterback of his generation, Mahomes remains a formidable force in the NFL.
