Patty Kempner, born on August 24, 1942, is an esteemed American former competition swimmer who made her mark as an Olympic champion and a world record-holder in two events. Her journey in the world of swimming began at a tender age, as she started competing in swim meets around seven years old.
Under the guidance of coach Kris Kristensen, Kempner dedicated herself to the sport, training rigorously with twice-daily sessions during summer breaks. Her commitment paid off early, as she set a new Southern Pacific AAU record in the 11-12 age group for the 50-yard breaststroke, clocking in at thirty-seven point nine seconds.
On February 23, 1957, while representing the Kris Kristensen Swimming School, Kempner achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the Senior Women's American National record for the 200-yard individual medley with a time of two minutes and twenty-nine point two seconds. This impressive performance not only shattered the previous record by two seconds but also established a new SPA AAU record during the Aqua Carnival at El Camino Junior College, an event sponsored by the Southern California Youth Swimming Association.
In addition to her record-breaking swim, Kempner also secured a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke at the same meet, further solidifying her status as a formidable competitor in the swimming arena.
