Paul Bowles

Paul Bowles, born on December thirtieth, nineteen ten, was a multifaceted American artist known for his contributions as a writer, composer, translator, music critic, photographer, and poet. He grew up in a cultured middle-class environment in New York City, where his talents in music and writing began to flourish. Bowles pursued higher education at the University of Virginia and later traveled to Paris multiple times during the 1930s, immersing himself in the vibrant cultural scene.

His musical education included studying under the renowned composer Aaron Copland, and he made a name for himself in New York by composing music for theatrical productions and other works. However, it was his literary career that brought him critical acclaim, particularly with the publication of his first novel, The Sheltering Sky, in nineteen forty-nine. This novel, set in French North Africa, was inspired by his earlier travels to the region in nineteen thirty-one.

In nineteen forty-seven, Bowles made the pivotal decision to settle in Tangier, then part of the Tangier International Zone. His wife, Jane Bowles, joined him in nineteen forty-eight. Except for winters spent in Ceylon during the early nineteen fifties, Tangier became his home for the next fifty-two years, where he became a symbol of the American expatriate community.

Paul Bowles passed away in nineteen ninety-nine at the age of eighty-eight. His ashes were laid to rest near family graves in Lakemont Cemetery, located in upstate New York, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to the arts.
