Paul Coffey

Paul Coffey, born on June first, nineteen sixty-one, is a distinguished Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and coach. Over the course of his illustrious career, he played for nine teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) from nineteen eighty to two thousand, showcasing his exceptional speed and scoring ability.

Renowned for his offensive prowess, Coffey ranks second all-time among NHL defencemen in goals, assists, and points, trailing only Ray Bourque. He has been honored with the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman three times and earned a spot on eight end-of-season All-Star teams, split evenly between first and second teams.

Coffey's remarkable achievements include holding the record for the most goals scored by a defenceman in a single season, with forty-eight in nineteen eighty-five to eighty-six. He is also the only defenceman to have scored forty goals more than once, achieving this feat in nineteen eighty-three to eighty-four. Additionally, he is one of only two defencemen to surpass one hundred points in a season multiple times, accomplishing this five times throughout his career.

During his time in the NHL, Coffey played for notable teams such as the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Detroit Red Wings, among others. He is a four-time Stanley Cup champion, having won three titles with Edmonton and one with Pittsburgh. Born in Weston, Ontario, and raised in Malton, Ontario, his legacy was honored when the city of Mississauga renamed Malton Arena to Paul Coffey Arena and Wildwood Park to Paul Coffey Park in a ceremony on September twenty-third, two thousand sixteen. In two thousand seventeen, he was recognized as one of the one hundred Greatest NHL Players in history.
