Paul G. Comba

Paul G. Comba, born on March sixth, nineteen twenty-six, was a distinguished Italian-American computer scientist and amateur astronomer, renowned for his extensive contributions to the field of minor planet discovery. His early life began in the French protectorate of Tunisia, where he was born to Italian Tunisian parents, before relocating to Italy during his childhood.

At the age of seventeen, Comba embarked on his academic journey at the University of Turin, where he studied from nineteen forty-three to nineteen forty-six. Following his graduation, he moved to the United States in nineteen forty-six to attend Bluffton College, earning his degree in nineteen forty-seven. He furthered his education at Caltech, completing his Ph.D. in mathematics in nineteen fifty, with the degree conferred in nineteen fifty-two.

Comba's professional career began in nineteen fifty-one when he moved to Honolulu to teach at the University of Hawaiʻi until nineteen sixty. He later joined IBM, where he made significant advancements in software development and cryptography. Notably, he developed a multiplication algorithm for large numbers that dramatically reduced computation time to as little as three percent of traditional methods.

In recognition of his contributions to astronomy, Comba was awarded the Leslie C. Peltier Award in two thousand three. He also authored the Astronomical League's Asteroid Club Observing Guide and was an active member of the Prescott Astronomy Club, further solidifying his legacy in the astronomical community.
