Paul Gascoigne

Paul John Gascoigne, affectionately known as Gazza, was born on 27 May 1967 in Gateshead, England. He emerged as one of the most gifted playmakers of his generation, earning a reputation as one of the finest English footballers in history. His extraordinary talent was recognized by the National Football Museum, which described him as the most naturally talented English footballer of his era. During his playing days, Gascoigne captured the hearts of fans, with broadcaster Terry Wogan dubbing him 'probably the most popular man in Britain' in September 1990, leading to a phenomenon known as 'Gazzamania'.

Gascoigne's football journey began when he signed schoolboy terms with Newcastle United, turning professional with the club in 1984. His career took a significant turn in 1988 when he transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of two million two hundred thousand pounds. He celebrated success with Spurs, winning the FA Cup in 1991, before moving to Lazio in Italy for five million five hundred thousand pounds. His time at Rangers was marked by further triumphs, including two league titles and a Scottish Cup.

On the international stage, Gascoigne represented the England national team from 1988 to 1998, earning fifty-seven caps and scoring ten goals. He was a key player in the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where his emotional reaction to a yellow card became iconic.
