Paul IV of Constantinople

Paul IV of Constantinople, also known as Paul the New, served as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from the year seven hundred eighty until his resignation in seven hundred eighty-four. His tenure was marked by significant theological debates, particularly regarding the veneration of icons, a contentious issue of the time.

Initially, Paul IV opposed the practice of icon veneration. However, recognizing the need for resolution in the ongoing iconoclast controversy, he advocated for the convening of an ecumenical council. This move demonstrated his commitment to addressing the divisions within the Church and seeking a path toward unity.

As he aged and faced health challenges, Paul IV chose to retire from his ecclesiastical duties, seeking solace in a monastery. His resignation paved the way for Tarasios of Constantinople, who was a lay administrator at the time, to succeed him.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Paul IV is venerated as a saint, with his feast day celebrated on the thirtieth of August. His legacy continues to resonate within the Church, reflecting his contributions to its history and theological discourse.
