His parents had endured the hardships of enslavement in Kentucky prior to the American Civil War, which deeply influenced Dunbar's literary voice. He began crafting stories and poetry in his childhood, showcasing his talent early on by publishing his first poems at the age of sixteen in a local newspaper. His literary prowess earned him the presidency of his high school's literary society.
