Paul Maurice, born on January 30, 1967, is a distinguished Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player, currently serving as the head coach for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL). His coaching career is marked by significant milestones, including becoming the youngest coach in NHL history to reach one thousand games at the age of forty-three, a feat he accomplished on November 28, 2010.
Before embarking on his coaching journey, Maurice played four years as a defenceman in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) until an eye injury curtailed his playing career. He began his coaching tenure with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes franchise from 1995 to 2003, later taking the helm of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2006 to 2008. Maurice returned to the Hurricanes on December 3, 2008, after the dismissal of Peter Laviolette, only to be let go again on November 28, 2011.
Following a brief period coaching Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), Maurice joined the Winnipeg Jets in January 2014. After resigning from the Jets in December 2021, he was appointed head coach of the Florida Panthers in June 2022. Under his leadership, the Panthers achieved remarkable success, making three consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
On June 24, 2024, Maurice led the Panthers to their first Stanley Cup championship, triumphing in a thrilling seven-game series against the Edmonton Oilers. This victory marked his twenty-sixth season as a head coach, setting a record for the most seasons coached by a first-time champion. Maurice continued his winning streak by coaching the Panthers to a second consecutive Stanley Cup championship on June 17, 2025, once again defeating the Oilers, this time in six games.
