O'Donovan's journey to success began at the 2016 World Rowing Championships, where he first captured the world title in the men's lightweight single sculls. That same year, he and his brother Gary earned a silver medal in the Men's lightweight double sculls at the Summer Olympics. Their partnership flourished, leading to a gold medal at the 2018 World Rowing Championships.

In 2019, O'Donovan teamed up with Fintan McCarthy, and together they achieved remarkable feats, including becoming world champions at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. They continued their winning streak with gold medals at the 2021 European Rowing Championships and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where they also set a world best time.
