Paul Xuereb, born on July twenty-first, nineteen twenty-three, was a prominent Maltese politician, journalist, and writer. His educational journey took him to the Regent Street Polytechnic in London, where he delved into journalism, Political Economy, and Political Science. After completing his studies, he returned to Malta in nineteen fifty, embarking on a career that would see him influence both the political and media landscapes of his country.
In nineteen fifty-eight, Xuereb joined the Department of Education as a visiting Master at the Lyceum, marking the beginning of his significant contributions to education. The following year, he became involved with the Freedom Press, serving as Literary Editor and Assistant Editor of the Malta Labour Party's publication, The Voice of Malta, until nineteen sixty-four. His political career commenced in nineteen sixty-two when he was elected as a Member of Parliament, a position he successfully retained in subsequent elections held in nineteen sixty-six, nineteen seventy-one, nineteen seventy-six, and nineteen eighty-one.
During his political tenure, Xuereb served as a Cabinet Minister from nineteen seventy-one to nineteen seventy-six. His leadership skills were further recognized when he was appointed Acting President of the Republic of Malta on February sixteenth, nineteen eighty-seven, following the term of Agatha Barbara. He held this esteemed position until April nineteen eighty-nine, during which time he made significant contributions to the governance of Malta.
In honor of his legacy, a bronze statue designed by the late sculptor Anton Agius was erected in Howards' Gardens, just outside the Bastions of Mdina, commemorating his impact on Maltese society.
