Paula Ivan, born Paula Ionescu on July 20, 1963, in Herăști, Giurgiu County, is a distinguished retired Romanian middle-distance runner. She completed her education at Gheorghe Șincai High School in Bucharest in 1982, laying the foundation for her illustrious athletic career.
In 1987, Ivan showcased her talent by winning gold medals in both the 1500 m and 3000 m events at the Summer Universiade. Although she faced challenges at the World Championships later that year, her determination shone through at the Balkan Games in July 1988, where she clinched victories in the 800 m and 1500 m, setting her personal best in the 800 m.
Ivan made history on July 27, 1988, by breaking the four-minute barrier in the 1500 m with a remarkable time of 3:58.80, which she improved to 3:56.22 in Zurich on August 17. Her Olympic journey in 1988 was nothing short of spectacular, as she earned a silver medal in the 3000 m and a gold in the 1500 m, with her winning time of 3:53.96 standing as the Olympic record until 2021.
Recognized as the BTA Best Balkan Athlete of the Year in 1988, Ivan continued to excel, winning the 1500 m at the European Indoor Championships in Den Haag in 1989. That same year, she shattered the world record for the mile with a time of 4:15.61. After repeating her golden double at the Universiade in Duisburg and winning the 1500 m at the IAAF World Cup in Barcelona, she transitioned to coaching.
Ivan's competitive spirit remained evident as she participated in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships four times between 1984 and 1987, contributing to a bronze medal for the Romanian team in 1985. After a decade-long hiatus, she made a comeback in 2000, achieving a season's best of 4:04.66 in the 1500 m. Since 2002, she has dedicated her expertise to the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at Spiru Haret University in Bucharest.
