His military career began in World War I, where he demonstrated exceptional bravery, earning the Cross of St. George on two occasions. After sustaining injuries in nineteen seventeen, Batov was sent to a military school in Petrograd, where he aligned himself with the Bolshevik cause.

Batov's commitment to the revolutionary ideals led him to fight in the Russian Civil War and serve as an advisor with the XII International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. His strategic acumen was further showcased during World War II, where he commanded the 51st Army in the Crimea and later took charge of the 3rd Army and the 4th Tank Army, which was subsequently renamed the 65th Army.

Following the war, Batov continued to serve his country by commanding the Carpathian Military District, solidifying his legacy as a twice-decorated Hero of the Soviet Union and a key figure in Soviet military history.
