Pavel Peter Gojdič

Pavel Peter Gojdič, born on July seventeenth, eighteen eighty-eight, was a distinguished Rusyn Basilian monk and the eparch of the Slovak Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov. His life was marked by a profound commitment to his faith and community, which ultimately led him to become a significant figure in the religious landscape of Slovakia.

In the wake of the Czechoslovak coup d'état in nineteen forty-eight, Gojdič faced persecution under the communist regime. He was arrested by the StB, the secret police, and charged with high treason. Despite the regime's offers of release contingent upon his agreement to lead the Orthodox Church in Czechoslovakia, Gojdič remained steadfast in his beliefs, ultimately dying as a prisoner of conscience in Leopoldov Prison on July seventeenth, nineteen sixty.

His legacy endured beyond his death, as he was posthumously honored by Czechoslovak president Václav Havel following the Velvet Revolution in nineteen eighty-nine. In two thousand one, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, recognizing his unwavering faith and sacrifice.

Additionally, Gojdič's courageous actions during the Holocaust, where he played a pivotal role in saving one thousand five hundred Jewish lives in Slovakia, earned him the title of Righteous Among the Nations from Yad Vashem in two thousand seven. His life story is a testament to the power of faith and moral conviction in the face of oppression.
