Pedro Arrupe

Pedro Arrupe, born on November fourteenth, nineteen oh seven, in Bilbao, was a prominent Basque Spanish Catholic priest and a significant figure in the Society of Jesus. He served as the twenty-eighth superior general of the Jesuits from nineteen sixty-five until nineteen eighty-three, a period during which he was instrumental in implementing the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. His leadership emphasized a faith that seeks justice and a preferential option for the poor, earning him recognition as a second founder of the Society.

Arrupe's journey with the Jesuits began in nineteen twenty-seven when he joined the order, and he was ordained to the priesthood in nineteen thirty-six. His commitment to service was profoundly demonstrated in nineteen forty-five when he was a novice master near Hiroshima. There, he utilized his medical training to assist victims of the atomic bombing, showcasing his dedication to humanitarian efforts.

In nineteen eighty-three, Arrupe faced a significant health challenge when he suffered a stroke that led to paralysis, prompting his resignation from leadership. Despite this setback, he continued to inspire others until his passing in nineteen ninety-one at the local Jesuit infirmary. His legacy endures, and in two thousand eighteen, the Jesuits and the Diocese of Rome initiated the process for his canonization, recognizing his profound impact on the Church and society.
