Pedro Cateriano

Pedro Cateriano, born on June twenty-six, nineteen fifty-eight, in Lima, Peru, is a distinguished lawyer and politician. He pursued his law degree at the prestigious Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, specializing in constitutional law. His political career began in the early nineties when he served a brief term in the Peruvian Congress, where he played a significant role as a member of the congressional investigative committee focused on Alan García's first administration.

Following a failed attempt to return to Congress, Cateriano became a vocal opponent of Alberto Fujimori's presidency. His commitment to justice led to his appointment to the Constitutional Reform Advisory Body under Valentín Paniagua's administration. He later served as Deputy Minister of Justice during Alejandro Toledo's presidency, a position he held until his resignation in June two thousand two.

During Ollanta Humala's presidency, Cateriano was appointed Minister of Defense, a role he held from July two thousand twelve to April two thousand fifteen. His tenure was marked by controversy, particularly regarding his clashes with the opposition and his support for military service enrollment sanctions, which were later deemed unconstitutional. In April two thousand fifteen, he succeeded Ana Jara as Prime Minister of Peru, a position he held until July two thousand sixteen.

In July two thousand twenty, Cateriano was sworn in as Prime Minister once again, this time under Martín Vizcarra's administration, amid significant criticism regarding the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. His term was short-lived, lasting less than three weeks, as Congress voted against his confirmation, leading to his departure from office on August six, two thousand twenty.
