Pedro González de Mendoza

Pedro González de Mendoza, born on May third, fourteen twenty-eight, was a prominent figure in the Spanish Catholic Church and a significant political player during the reign of King Henry IV of Castile. His career began as a Latin Catholic priest, but he quickly rose to prominence as a statesman and lawyer, earning a reputation for his strategic acumen.

In fourteen sixty-seven, Mendoza demonstrated his loyalty to King Henry IV by participating in the Second Battle of Olmedo. His dedication to the crown was further solidified when he was appointed bishop of Sigüenza in fourteen sixty-eight. Just five years later, in fourteen seventy-three, he ascended to the rank of cardinal and archbishop of Seville, also taking on the role of chancellor of Castile.

Amidst the tumultuous succession dispute following the death of Enrique IV, Mendoza aligned himself with Isabel, advocating for her claim to the throne. His involvement in the battle of Toro was pivotal, as he fought alongside the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella against the supporters of Juana la Beltraneja. His influence in Castile was so profound that he was often referred to as 'the Third King' during the reign of Isabel and Ferdinand.

In fourteen eighty-two, Mendoza's ecclesiastical career reached new heights when he became the cardinal-archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain. He presided over the royal council for two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the political landscape of Spain.
