At the age of thirty-seven, Gutiérrez moved to Centro Habana, a neighborhood marked by its dilapidated state. There, he was struck by the stark contrast of violence and the vibrant energy of its residents, which would later influence his literary works. He has penned several acclaimed novels, including the renowned 'Dirty Havana Trilogy,' 'King of Havana,' and 'Tropical Animal,' the latter winning Spain's Alfonso Garcia Ramos Prize in two thousand.

His literary prowess extends to works such as 'The Insatiable Spiderman,' 'Dog Meat,' which earned him Italy's Narrativa Sur del Mundo Prize, and 'Snake's Nest,' awarded the Prix des Amériques Insulaires et de la Guyane in two thousand eight.
