Pedro Juan Gutiérrez

Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, born on January twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty, is a multifaceted Cuban artist known for his contributions as a writer, journalist, poet, and painter. Growing up in Pinar del Río, he began his working life at the tender age of eleven, selling ice cream and newspapers. His diverse career includes roles as a soldier, swimming and kayak instructor, agricultural worker, construction technician, technical designer, radio speaker, and journalist for twenty-six years.

At the age of thirty-seven, Gutiérrez moved to Centro Habana, a neighborhood marked by its dilapidated state. There, he was struck by the stark contrast of violence and the vibrant energy of its residents, which would later influence his literary works. He has penned several acclaimed novels, including the renowned 'Dirty Havana Trilogy,' 'King of Havana,' and 'Tropical Animal,' the latter winning Spain's Alfonso Garcia Ramos Prize in two thousand.

His literary prowess extends to works such as 'The Insatiable Spiderman,' 'Dog Meat,' which earned him Italy's Narrativa Sur del Mundo Prize, and 'Snake's Nest,' awarded the Prix des Amériques Insulaires et de la Guyane in two thousand eight. Gutiérrez's stories have reached a wider audience, with 'Dirty Havana Trilogy,' 'Tropical Animal,' and 'The Insatiable Spiderman' translated into English. Since nineteen ninety-four, he has authored ten prose books and five poetry collections.

In two thousand seven, he published 'Corazón Mestizo,' a travel book that explores the essence of Cuba. Gutiérrez's artistic talents also encompass painting and sculpting, showcasing his versatility and deep connection to his Cuban roots.
