Pedro Pablo Kuczynski Godard, known as PPK, was born on October 3, 1938, in the Miraflores District of Lima, Peru. His parents fled Germany during the rise of the Nazis, which shaped his early life and perspectives. Kuczynski pursued a career in economics and public administration, working in the United States before returning to Peru to enter politics. His impressive credentials include positions at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, culminating in his role as the general manager of Peru's Central Reserve Bank.
In the early 1980s, Kuczynski served as Minister of Energy and Mines under President Fernando Belaúnde Terry. He later held the positions of Minister of Economy and Finance and Prime Minister during Alejandro Toledo's presidency in the 2000s. Kuczynski first ran for president in the 2011 election, finishing third, but he supported right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori in the runoff, which was ultimately won by leftist Ollanta Humala. His political journey culminated in the 2016 election, where he narrowly defeated Fujimori to become president.
Kuczynski's presidency, which began on July 28, 2016, was marred by controversy. On December 15, 2017, the opposition-controlled Congress initiated impeachment proceedings against him, accusing him of dishonesty regarding payments from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. Although the Congress initially failed to secure enough votes for impeachment, further scandals led to a second impeachment vote. On March 21, 2018, Kuczynski resigned, just days before a likely conviction vote, and was succeeded by his First Vice President, Martín Vizcarra.
Since April 10, 2019, Kuczynski has been in pretrial detention due to ongoing investigations into corruption, money laundering, and his connections to Odebrecht. His political career, marked by significant achievements and equally significant controversies, reflects the complexities of governance in contemporary Peru.
