Pedro Sánchez, born on February twenty-ninth, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Spanish politician and economist who has been serving as the Prime Minister of Spain since June 2018. He is also the Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), a position he has held since 2017, after previously serving from 2014 to 2016. In addition, he has been the ninth president of Socialist International since 2022.
Sánchez's political journey began in August two thousand four when he became a city councillor in Madrid. He was elected to the Congress of Deputies in two thousand nine, marking the start of his significant influence in Spanish politics. In two thousand fourteen, he ascended to the role of Secretary-General of the PSOE, becoming the Leader of the Opposition. He led the party through the challenging general elections of two thousand fifteen and two thousand sixteen, but resigned shortly after the latter due to internal conflicts within the party.
After an eight-month hiatus, Sánchez reclaimed the leadership of the PSOE by defeating rivals Susana Díaz and Patxi López. His political acumen was showcased on June first, two thousand eighteen, when he successfully led a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, gaining support from Unidas Podemos and various regionalist and nationalist parties. The following day, he was appointed Prime Minister by King Felipe VI.
Under his leadership, the PSOE achieved a significant milestone by gaining thirty-eight seats in the April two thousand nineteen general election, marking their first national victory since two thousand eight. Although they did not secure a majority, Sánchez continued to demonstrate his political prowess by winning the most votes in the November two thousand nineteen general election, leading to the formation of a minority coalition government with Unidas Podemos, the first of its kind since Spain's return to democracy. Following regional election setbacks in May two thousand twenty-three, Sánchez called for a snap general election, which resulted in the PSOE retaining all its seats. Despite finishing second behind the People's Party, he successfully formed a coalition government and was appointed to a third term as Prime Minister on November seventeenth, two thousand twenty-three.
