Pelageya Shajn

Pelageya Shajn, born on April nineteenth, eighteen ninety-four, was a pioneering Russian astronomer whose contributions significantly advanced the field of astronomy in the Soviet Union. She is notably recognized as the first woman to discover a minor planet, achieving this remarkable feat at the Simeiz Observatory in nineteen twenty-eight.

Throughout her career, Pelageya made substantial discoveries, including numerous variable stars, which are crucial for understanding stellar evolution. Her collaborative efforts also led to the co-discovery of the periodic, Jupiter-family comet known as 61P/Shajn–Schaldach, further solidifying her legacy in the astronomical community.
