Penny Pitou, born on October eighth, nineteen thirty-eight, is a celebrated former United States Olympic alpine skier. She made history in nineteen sixty by becoming the first American skier to win a medal in the Olympic downhill event, securing silver in both the Downhill and Giant Slalom at the Squaw Valley Games. Her remarkable achievements earned her a place in the New England Women's Sports Hall of Fame in two thousand one.
Raised in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, Penny began skiing at a young age, honing her skills on a hill in her backyard before progressing to local ski areas. After moving to Laconia, New Hampshire, she graduated from Laconia High School in nineteen fifty-six and went on to attend Middlebury College, where she was part of the class of nineteen sixty. Her early passion for skiing led her to defy gender norms by trying out for the boys' ski team, an experience that showcased her determination and resilience.
At the age of seventeen, Penny was selected for the U.S. Olympic Ski Team, guided by her mentor, the double-medalist Andrea Mead Lawrence. Despite a setback at the nineteen fifty-six Olympics, Penny's dedication to her sport shone through, culminating in her Olympic success four years later. In addition to her athletic career, she met and married Austrian skier Egon N. Zimmermann in nineteen sixty, with whom she had two children before their divorce in nineteen sixty-eight.
Beyond her Olympic accolades, Penny has remained active in the skiing community, running a ski school and a travel company that organizes ski trips to European resorts. She has also made appearances in popular culture, including a notable appearance on the television show 'What's My Line.' In December two thousand seven, she was seen alongside New York Senator Hillary Clinton during the lead-up to the New Hampshire primary for the two thousand eight presidential election.
