Per Mertesacker

Per Mertesacker, born on September 29, 1984, is a distinguished German football coach and former professional player renowned for his role as a centre back. He began his senior career at Hannover 96, where he made his league debut in November 2003. His exceptional defensive skills earned him the nickname 'the Defence Pole' and a remarkable record of thirty-one league games without a booking.

After impressing at Hannover and showcasing his talent on the international stage during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Mertesacker transferred to Werder Bremen for a fee of five million euros. His tenure at Bremen solidified his reputation as a strategic defender, contributing to the team's victory in the 2009 DFB-Pokal and a runner-up finish in the 2009 UEFA Cup.

In 2011, Mertesacker made a significant move to Arsenal for a fee of eight million pounds, quickly establishing himself as a key player. He formed a formidable partnership with Laurent Koscielny, helping the club end a nine-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup in 2014. He continued to lead the team, captaining them to further FA Cup victories in 2015 and 2017, although injuries limited his appearances in the latter stages of his career, leading to his retirement in 2018.

On the international front, Mertesacker represented Germany at various youth levels before debuting for the senior team in 2004. He became a mainstay in the national squad, participating in multiple UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups, culminating in a victory at the 2014 tournament.
