Pernell Whitaker

Pernell Whitaker Sr., born on January 2, 1964, was an iconic American professional boxer whose career spanned from 1984 to 2001. Renowned for his exceptional defensive skills, Whitaker earned a reputation as one of the greatest defensive boxers in history. His prowess in the ring led him to become a four-weight world champion, securing titles in lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight categories.

Whitaker's amateur career was equally impressive, highlighted by a silver medal in the lightweight division at the 1982 World Championships, followed by a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games and the 1984 Olympics. His transition to professional boxing saw him achieve remarkable success, including the undisputed lightweight title and the lineal titles in both lightweight and welterweight divisions.

In 1989, his outstanding performance earned him the prestigious title of Fighter of the Year from both The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America. Whitaker holds the record for the longest unified lightweight championship reign in boxing history, with six successful title defenses.
