In two thousand eleven, Kitchen was selected as the third overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United, marking the start of a successful professional career. Over his tenure with the club, he made one hundred eighty-seven appearances and netted ten goals, contributing to the team's triumph in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in two thousand thirteen.

Kitchen's career took him across the Atlantic in March two thousand sixteen when he joined Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership, where he was appointed captain. After a brief stint with Randers in the Danish Superliga, he returned to Major League Soccer in January two thousand eighteen, signing with the LA Galaxy. Three years later, he continued his MLS journey with the Columbus Crew.
