He achieved remarkable success at the international level, securing a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics, a testament to his skill and dedication in the ring.

Domestically, Purhonen dominated the boxing scene, clinching nine consecutive Finnish titles across various weight divisions, including lightweight from nineteen sixty to sixty-one, light-welterweight in nineteen sixty-two, and welterweight from nineteen sixty-three to sixty-eight. His prowess also earned him the title of Nordic champion in nineteen sixty-one, nineteen sixty-three, and nineteen sixty-seven.

In nineteen sixty-nine, he transitioned to professional boxing, winning both of his bouts, one of which ended in a knockout. However, he chose to retire the same year. Following his boxing career, Purhonen dedicated himself to philanthropy by founding Kriisipalveluyhdistys, a non-profit organization focused on training individuals to effectively handle crisis situations.

Despite his achievements, Purhonen faced personal challenges in his later years, suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the last six years of his life. He passed away in two thousand eleven at the age of sixty-eight, just three years after being honored with induction into the Finnish Boxing Hall of Fame. His final resting place is in the Malmi Cemetery, where his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
