Between nineteen sixty-eight and nineteen seventy-five, Zhekov played for CSKA Sofia, where he became the club's all-time leading scorer with one hundred seventy-five goals. His impressive tally of one hundred forty-four goals for the team solidified his status as a football legend. Additionally, he earned the prestigious European Golden Boot in nineteen sixty-nine and was awarded two European Bronze Boots throughout his career.

With a remarkable record of three hundred thirty-three appearances and two hundred fifty-three goals in the Bulgarian A Group, Zhekov's legacy in Bulgarian football is unparalleled. After retiring from playing, he took on the role of coach at PFC Hebar Pazardzhik, contributing to the sport in a new capacity.
