Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pete Maravich

Peter Press Maravich, affectionately known as Pistol Pete, was born on June 22, 1947, and became one of the most iconic figures in American basketball history. He showcased his extraordinary talent while playing for the Louisiana State University Tigers, a team coached by his father, Press Maravich. During his college career, he achieved an astounding total of three thousand six hundred sixty-seven points, averaging an impressive forty-four point two points per game. This remarkable feat was accomplished before the introduction of the three-point line and shot clock, and prior to the NCAA allowing freshmen to compete at the varsity level.

In 1970, Maravich was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA draft, where he began his professional career. Over the next decade, he played four seasons in Atlanta before being traded to the New Orleans Jazz, an expansion team, where he spent five seasons and part of a sixth. His final stint was with the Boston Celtics, but injuries ultimately led to his retirement from the game.

Throughout his ten-year career, Maravich was recognized for his exceptional skills, earning five All-Star selections and four All-NBA honors. He was one of the youngest players ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, celebrated for his unparalleled ball-handling abilities and creative offensive play. Tragically, Maravich's life was cut short when he passed away at the age of forty during a pick-up game in 1988, due to an undetected heart defect.

His legacy endures, as he was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary team in 1996 and the 75th Anniversary team in 2021, solidifying his status as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
