Peter Appleyard, born on October twenty-sixth, nineteen twenty-eight, was a distinguished British–Canadian jazz vibraphonist, percussionist, and composer. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to the vibrant music scene in Toronto, where he became a beloved figure in various nightclubs and hotels, including The Park Plaza, Stop 33, The 54th, The Chelsea Inn, and The Montreal Bistro.
Throughout his career, Appleyard collaborated with numerous orchestras in the city and made notable appearances on Canadian television and radio. He hosted his own successful television program, 'Peter Appleyard Presents,' on CHCH Channel eleven, which was recorded live from Albert's Hall. This show featured a variety of jazz musicians, showcasing talents from Blossom Dearie to Lionel Hampton.
In the early nineteen seventies, he gained widespread acclaim for his performances with Benny Goodman's jazz sextet, embarking on international tours that further solidified his reputation. His contributions to the jazz community were recognized in nineteen ninety-two when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, honoring his status as an internationally renowned vibraphonist who represented the Canadian jazz scene across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.
