Péter Balázs

Péter Balázs, born on December fifth, nineteen forty-one, is a distinguished Hungarian diplomat, economist, politician, and university educator. He graduated from the Budapest School of Economics in nineteen sixty-three and dedicated a significant portion of his career to the Hungarian government. His tenure in public service took a pivotal turn on May first, two thousand four, when Hungary joined the European Union, leading to his appointment to the European Commission under the leadership of Romano Prodi.

As the Hungarian European Commissioner, Balázs held the Regional Policy portfolio until the conclusion of the Prodi Commission on November twenty-first, two thousand four. Following his term, he transitioned to academia, becoming a professor at the International Relations and European Studies Department of the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. In two thousand five, he founded a research center focused on EU Enlargement Studies at CEU, further contributing to the field of European studies.

In April two thousand nine, Balázs was appointed as Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs, a role he held until May two thousand ten. During his time in office, he made headlines for his remarks on Hungary-Slovakia relations, drawing comparisons between Slovakia's language law and the language policies of the Ceauşescu regime. He was succeeded by János Martonyi after his term.

Beyond his political and academic endeavors, Balázs is an active member of the advisory board of the Prague European Summit, where he continues to influence discussions on European integration and policy.
