Peter Hardeman Burnett

Peter Hardeman Burnett, born on November fifteenth, eighteen oh seven, was a prominent American politician and the first elected governor of California, serving from December twentieth, eighteen forty-nine, to January ninth, eighteen fifty-one. His governorship came just before California's admission to the Union as the thirty-first state on September ninth, eighteen fifty. Raised in a slave-owning family in Missouri, Burnett's early life was marked by financial struggles that led him westward.

Initially settling in Oregon Country, Burnett quickly became involved in local politics, eventually serving as the Supreme Judge of the Provisional Government of Oregon. His tenure was controversial; he advocated for the total exclusion of African Americans from the territory and authored the infamous
