Peter II of Bulgaria

Peter II of Bulgaria, originally named Theodor and also known as Theodor-Peter, was a pivotal figure in the restoration of the Bulgarian Empire, reigning as its first emperor from the year one thousand one hundred eighty-five until his death in one thousand one hundred ninety-seven. His origins trace back to the Byzantine theme of Paristrion, although the specifics of his birth remain shrouded in mystery.

In the year one thousand one hundred eighty-five, Peter and his brother Asen approached the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos, seeking an estate in the Balkan Mountains. After facing humiliation and rejection, they ignited a rebellion, leveraging the widespread discontent caused by a new tax imposed on the Bulgarians and Vlachs. To rally support, they enlisted local prophets to proclaim that Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica had forsaken the Romans in favor of their cause.

Despite initial setbacks, including a defeat by the Byzantine army that forced Peter and Asen to seek refuge with the Cumans in April one thousand one hundred eighty-six, they returned later that year with Cuman forces. This strategic alliance allowed them to seize control of Paristrion, marking the establishment of a new state that was seen as the successor to the First Bulgarian Empire. Throughout the early one thousand one hundred nineties, the brothers conducted regular raids against Byzantine territories.

Peter's reign saw significant territorial expansion, particularly during the conflicts between Isaac II and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa during the Third Crusade, which enabled him to conquer additional lands in one thousand one hundred ninety. By one thousand one hundred ninety-two, Peter and Asen had divided their realm, with Peter governing Preslav and the northeastern region. Following the assassination of Asen by a boyar in one thousand one hundred ninety-six, Peter appointed his brother Kaloyan as co-ruler, but tragically, Peter himself was murdered the following year.
