Peter Samuel George Mackenzie

Peter Samuel George Mackenzie, born on December nineteenth, eighteen sixty-two, was a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician. Hailing from Cumberland House in the Hudson's Bay Company territories, he was the son of Jane and Roderick Mackenzie. His father, a cousin of the renowned explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie, served as an agent for the company. Peter's educational journey took him through esteemed institutions, including Upper Canada College in Toronto, the High School of Montreal, St. Francis College in Richmond, and McGill University's Faculty of Law, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Law.

After being called to the bar of Quebec on February fourth, eighteen eighty-four, Mackenzie established his own legal practice in Richmond. He later formed a partnership with Henry Aylmer, a former member of the House of Commons, and Auguste-Maurice Tessier. Eventually, he returned to practicing law independently and earned the title of King's Counsel on June thirtieth, nineteen oh three.

Mackenzie's political career began in earnest when he was elected as a Liberal member to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for Richmond during the nineteen hundred Quebec general election. He was re-elected unopposed in nineteen oh four and nineteen oh eight. In January nineteen ten, he was appointed Treasurer in the cabinet of Lomer Gouin, leading to a vacancy in his seat, which he reclaimed unopposed in a by-election that same month and again in the general election of nineteen twelve.

Beyond his legal and political endeavors, Mackenzie was actively involved in education, serving on the governing body of Bishop's College and joining the Protestant Committee of the Council of Public Instruction in nineteen oh six. Tragically, he passed away in office on November first, nineteen fourteen, at the age of fifty-one, and was laid to rest in St Ann's Cemetery, Richmond, just three days later. He left behind a widow, who had previously been known as Mrs. Penfold.
