Peter Sutcliffe

Peter William Sutcliffe, born on June 2, 1946, was an English truck driver who became infamously known as the Yorkshire Ripper. Between 1975 and 1980, he was convicted of murdering thirteen women and attempting to murder seven others, primarily targeting vulnerable individuals in red-light districts. His heinous acts drew comparisons to the notorious Victorian killer Jack the Ripper, leading to extensive media coverage and public fear.

Sutcliffe's criminal activities began in residential areas but shifted towards prostitutes, whom he believed were less protected by law enforcement. His capture in January 1981 came after a routine traffic stop in Sheffield, where he was found with false number plates. During questioning by West Yorkshire Police, he confessed to the murders, claiming divine inspiration for his actions. Despite pleading not guilty on the grounds of diminished responsibility, he was convicted of murder.

The investigation into Sutcliffe's crimes was one of the largest and most costly manhunts in British history, with police facing significant criticism for their failure to apprehend him sooner, despite having interviewed him multiple times. Following his conviction, a review known as the Byford Report was commissioned, which validated the criticisms of the police's handling of the case and led to reforms in investigative procedures across British law enforcement.

In March 1984, Sutcliffe was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and transferred to Broadmoor Hospital. His legal battles continued, culminating in a 2010 ruling that he would serve a whole life order without the possibility of release. In August 2016, he was deemed mentally fit to return to prison. Sutcliffe passed away on November 13, 2020, from complications related to diabetes, leaving behind a legacy marked by tragedy and horror.
