Peter van de Kamp

Peter van de Kamp, born on December twenty-sixth, nineteen oh one, was a distinguished Dutch astronomer who spent the majority of his life in the United States. He served as a professor of astronomy at Swarthmore College and held the position of director at the college's Sproul Observatory from nineteen thirty-seven until nineteen seventy-two. His academic journey was marked by a deep specialization in astrometry, focusing on the parallax and proper motions of stars.

Throughout his career, van de Kamp contributed significantly to parallax programs and the study of stellar motion. He collaborated with notable figures such as Samuel Alfred Mitchell and Harold Alden, and alongside Alexander N. Vyssotsky, he dedicated eight years to measuring eighteen thousand proper motions.
