Peter Vaughan

Peter Ewart Ohm, born on April 4, 1923, was a distinguished English actor whose career spanned several decades, showcasing his remarkable talent across stage, film, and television. Known professionally as Peter Vaughan, he became a familiar face in British entertainment, celebrated for his compelling supporting roles.

Vaughan's portrayal of Grouty in the beloved sitcom Porridge, along with its 1979 film adaptation, remains one of his most iconic performances. His versatility allowed him to shine in various genres, including a memorable recurring role alongside Robert Lindsay in the sitcom Citizen Smith, and a notable performance as Tom Hedden in the controversial film Straw Dogs.

In addition to his television work, Vaughan captivated audiences on stage and in film, playing Winston the Ogre in the fantasy classic Time Bandits and Tom Franklin in the drama Chancer. His poignant role as Mr. Stevens Sr. in The Remains of the Day further solidified his reputation as a skilled character actor.

In the later years of his career, Vaughan took on the role of Maester Aemon in HBO's critically acclaimed series Game of Thrones, which aired from 2011 to 2015. This role introduced him to a new generation of fans and showcased his enduring talent until his passing on December 6, 2016.
