Peter Welch

Peter Welch, born on May second, nineteen forty-seven, in Springfield, Massachusetts, is a prominent American lawyer and politician. He has made significant contributions to Vermont politics over the past four decades and currently serves as the junior United States senator from Vermont, a position he has held since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Welch previously represented Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from two thousand seven to two thousand twenty-three.

Welch's educational journey began at the College of the Holy Cross, followed by the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. His legal career spans several decades, during which he worked as a public defender and later established a personal injury law practice. His political career took off in the Vermont Senate, where he served from nineteen eighty-one to nineteen eighty-nine, including a term as minority leader and as the Senate's president pro tempore, becoming the first Democrat to hold that position.

In nineteen eighty-eight, Welch sought a seat in the United States House of Representatives but lost the Democratic primary. He later ran for governor of Vermont in nineteen ninety, facing defeat in the general election. After a brief hiatus from politics, he returned in two thousand one, filling a vacancy in the Vermont Senate and winning reelection in two thousand two and two thousand four. He served as Senate president from two thousand three to two thousand seven.

Welch's political journey culminated in his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in two thousand six, succeeding Bernie Sanders. In November two thousand twenty-one, he announced his candidacy for the Senate to succeed retiring Senator Patrick Leahy. After winning the Democratic primary in August two thousand twenty-two and the general election in November, he made history as the oldest freshman U.S. senator at the age of seventy-five, surpassing the previous record held by Frederick H. Gillett.
