Petro Poroshenko

Petro Poroshenko, born on September 26, 1965, is a prominent Ukrainian politician and businessman who served as the fifth president of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. His political career includes significant roles such as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2010 and Minister of Trade and Economic Development in 2012. Poroshenko's leadership was marked by his election in 2014, where he won a decisive victory with fifty-five point forty-six percent of the vote in the first round, avoiding a runoff.

During his presidency, Poroshenko navigated Ukraine through the initial phase of the war in Donbas, successfully reclaiming much of the region from Russian separatist forces. He played a crucial role in signing the Minsk Agreements in September 2014 and February 2015, which helped stabilize the conflict and reduce casualties. His administration focused on rebuilding the Ukrainian military, which had been weakened during the previous presidency, and he was a strong advocate for Ukraine's integration with the European Union, signing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement in June 2014.

In addition to his foreign policy achievements, Poroshenko's domestic agenda included promoting the Ukrainian language, fostering nationalism, and implementing administrative decentralization. He was instrumental in the establishment of the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2018, which marked a significant shift away from the Moscow Patriarchate. His presidency was encapsulated by the slogan 'armiia, mova, vira'—military, language, faith—reflecting his core priorities.

After his presidency, Poroshenko continued to serve as a people's deputy in the Verkhovna Rada and as the leader of the European Solidarity party. Known as the 'Chocolate King' for his ownership of the Roshen confectionery brand, he has been a significant figure in Ukrainian business and media, although he was compelled to sell his TV news channel, 5 Kanal, in compliance with anti-oligarch legislation in November 2021. Despite facing challenges, opinion polls indicate that he is viewed as an above-average president by the Ukrainian public.
