Petronius Maximus

Petronius Maximus, born in the year three hundred ninety-six, emerged as a significant figure in the tumultuous landscape of the Western Roman Empire. His brief tenure as emperor lasted a mere two and a half months in the year four hundred fifty-five, a period marked by political intrigue and instability.

A wealthy senator and prominent aristocrat, Maximus played a pivotal role in the assassinations of both Aëtius, the magister militum, and Emperor Valentinian III. Following these violent upheavals, he adeptly secured the Senate's support and employed bribery to win over palace officials, facilitating his rise to power.

In a bid to solidify his position, Maximus forced Licinia Eudoxia, the widow of Valentinian, into marriage with him, while also compelling her daughter Eudocia to marry his son. This controversial move not only angered Eudocia but also provoked Genseric, the Vandal king, who retaliated by sending a fleet to Rome.

Maximus's reign was characterized by a lack of military support, as he failed to secure troops from the Visigoths. In the chaos that ensued with the arrival of the Vandals, he became separated from his retinue and was ultimately killed by fellow Romans. The Vandals proceeded to sack Rome, highlighting the empire's growing vulnerability and the significant decline that would lead to its eventual collapse in four hundred seventy-six.
