Before his governorship, Bredesen was the 66th mayor of Nashville from 1991 to 1999, where he laid the groundwork for many urban developments. He is also recognized as the founder of HealthAmerica Corporation, a venture he successfully sold in 1986, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

As a member of the Democratic Party, Bredesen is noted for being the last Democrat to win or hold statewide office in Tennessee. His political stance is often described as that of a moderate Democrat, balancing fiscal conservatism with social liberalism.

After his governorship, he took on the role of chair at Silicon Ranch Corporation, a company dedicated to developing and operating solar power stations. In December 2017, he announced his candidacy for the United States Senate, aiming to fill the seat left vacant by Bob Corker. Although he won the Democratic primary on August 2, 2018, he ultimately lost the general election to Republican nominee Marsha Blackburn on November 6, 2018. Following this defeat, Bredesen and his campaign team launched Clearloop, a renewable energy startup.
