Phil Esposito

Phil Esposito, born on February 20, 1942, is a celebrated Canadian former professional ice hockey player, coach, and executive, currently serving as a broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Lightning. His illustrious career spanned eighteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he played for the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers. Esposito's remarkable achievements include winning two Stanley Cups with the Bruins and earning a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Esposito made history by becoming the first player to score over one hundred points in a single season, achieving one hundred twenty-six points in the nineteen sixty-eight to sixty-nine season. He repeated this extraordinary feat five more times and was the first player to net fifty goals in five consecutive seasons, including setting records with seventy-six goals and one hundred fifty-two points in the nineteen seventy to seventy-one season.

Throughout his career, Esposito garnered numerous accolades, winning the Art Ross Trophy as the leading point scorer five times, leading the league in goals six times, and being voted the Hart Trophy for Most Valuable Player twice. He was also named a first team All-Star center on six occasions, solidifying his status as a hockey legend.

After hanging up his skates, Esposito transitioned into coaching and management, serving as head coach and general manager for the Rangers for two seasons. In nineteen ninety-one, he co-founded the Tampa Bay Lightning with his brother Tony, marking the first NHL team in Florida. Esposito held the positions of president and general manager until nineteen ninety-eight and now contributes as the team's radio color commentator.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Esposito was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history in two thousand seventeen and was ranked as the ninth-best player of all time by The Athletic in two thousand twenty-three. His legacy is further honored with the retirement of his number seven jersey by the Bruins on December third, nineteen eighty-seven, and a statue in his likeness at Tampa Bay's Benchmark International Arena.
