Phil Murphy

Phil Murphy, born on August sixteenth, nineteen fifty-seven, is a prominent American politician, financier, and former diplomat. He served as the fifty-sixth governor of New Jersey from 2018 to 2026, representing the Democratic Party. Murphy's political journey began after a successful twenty-three-year career at Goldman Sachs, where he held several high-level positions and amassed considerable wealth before retiring in two thousand six.

Raised in Massachusetts, Murphy pursued higher education at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. His political involvement deepened when he became the finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee in the mid to late two thousands under Howard Dean. In preparation for his gubernatorial run, he and his wife, Tammy Murphy, established New Start New Jersey, a progressive organization aimed at fostering change.

In the two thousand seventeen gubernatorial election, Murphy triumphed over Republican candidate and then-Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, securing fifty-six percent of the vote. He was narrowly reelected in two thousand twenty-one with fifty-one point two percent, making him the first Democratic governor of New Jersey to win a second term since Brendan Byrne in nineteen seventy-seven.

During his tenure, Murphy enacted significant legislation, including the legalization of cannabis and sports betting, as well as automatic voter registration. His leadership was particularly notable during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he implemented various health measures to protect the public. In his second term, his wife Tammy sought to fill the Senate seat vacated by Bob Menendez, although she was unsuccessful. Murphy's governorship concluded with his succession by fellow Democrat Mikie Sherrill.
